Waterloo Roof Pros covers Waterloo and the wider Cedar Valley for roof replacement, leak tracing, storm restoration and commercial low-slope work. We fit laminated asphalt shingles, mechanically seamed and snap-lock standing seam, EPDM and TPO membrane, on-site formed aluminum gutters, ice barrier, drip edge and step flashing.

Every estimate we write starts with a pitch gauge on the deck, because slope is the number that decides the job. Under 4:12 the residential code requires a double underlayment application rather than a single ply, exposed-fastener metal panel stops qualifying at 3:12, and a deck-mounted skylight has to become a curb-mounted one. Those are three different prices for what looks like one roof.

That matters more here than almost anywhere. Census figures put close to a third of this city's housing units in the 1950s and 1960s, built quickly and built low for tractor-plant and packinghouse families, and roughly three-quarters of the stock predates 1980. Shallow planes are what we work on all day. We write the measured slope on every estimate so you can check the specification you are being sold against the price you are being quoted.

Roof Replacement in Waterloo, IA

Roof Replacement

Every replacement bid here opens with a pitch gauge laid on the deck. Slope decides the underlayment, the shingle line, the fastener count and whether metal qualifies at all, and this city's slopes run flatter than the national average.

Roof Leak Repair in Waterloo, IA

Roof Leak Repair

A leak on a shallow roof almost never lands where the stain shows. Water entering a 3:12 plane runs a long way sideways along the sheathing before gravity wins, so the wet drywall is often eight or ten feet from the opening.

Storm Damage Restoration in Waterloo, IA

Storm Damage Restoration

Northeast Iowa takes its severe weather in a narrow band of the calendar, and most of what we restore arrives between late April and early August. What we find the rest of the year is damage that was never repaired properly the first time.

Hail Damage Roofing in Waterloo, IA

Hail Damage Roofing

Hail falls close to vertical. A shallow roof therefore takes it almost square on, while a steep roof takes the same stones at a glancing angle that sheds much of the energy sideways.

Wind Damage Roofing in Waterloo, IA

Wind Damage Roofing

Waterloo sits on the Iowan Surface, the flat erosion plain that separates the Des Moines Lobe from the bluff country east of here. The Geological Survey describes it as low relief with long slopes and open views to the horizon.

Roof Inspections in Waterloo, IA

Roof Inspections

One genuine advantage of a shallow roof is that we can walk it. Most housing in this city can be inspected on foot in ordinary boots, so our reports come from close contact with the surface rather than from a drone photograph taken forty feet above it.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs in Waterloo, IA

Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Asphalt covers nearly every roof in this city, and the most consequential number on the job is the one most estimates leave off entirely. How the shingle is installed, and whether it may be installed at all, follows directly from the measured slope.

Metal Roofing in Waterloo, IA

Metal Roofing

Metal is the page where slope stops being a detail and becomes a veto. Rural Iowa runs on through-fastened agricultural panel, it is cheap, every lumberyard within forty miles stocks it, and on a great many Waterloo houses we will not install it.

Tile Roofing in Waterloo, IA

Tile Roofing

We install almost no tile in this city and we are not trying to change that. Tile is simply wrong for nearly every house in Waterloo, and a tile quote on a postwar ranch means something went badly astray.

Flat & Low-Slope Roofing in Waterloo, IA

Flat & Low-Slope Roofing

Most flat roofing in this city is residential rather than commercial, and it is attached to somebody's house. Ranch plans from the Deere and Rath years put a dead-flat deck over the carport, the breezeway, the rear porch and the utility room.

Roof Coatings & Sealing in Waterloo, IA

Roof Coatings & Sealing

We sell fewer coatings than almost anyone in this trade, and the page exists to explain why rather than to sell you one. Most of what gets coated in Black Hawk County should never have been coated.

Roof Ventilation in Waterloo, IA

Roof Ventilation

Ventilation advice written for a steep roof does not transfer to a shallow one, and most of what homeowners here have been told came from somewhere with steeper geometry. On a 3:12 roof spanning a twenty-eight foot house, the ridge sits about three and a half feet above the eave.

Skylights in Waterloo, IA

Skylights

Skylight work in Waterloo runs into the slope limit faster than it does anywhere with conventional roof pitches. On a lot of these houses the honest answer is a curb, a considerably bigger budget, or a sun tunnel instead of a skylight.

Gutters & Downspouts in Waterloo, IA

Gutters & Downspouts

Flat ground changes what a gutter is actually for. On the Iowan Surface a great many lots have no meaningful fall at all, so water leaving a downspout does not run away from the house.

Fascia & Soffit in Waterloo, IA

Fascia & Soffit

The eave is where this city's roofs actually rot, and the cause is the shallow overhang that came with the postwar plans. Twelve to sixteen inches of boxed eave gives a wall almost no protection from wind-driven rain, so the trim absorbs wetting the wall was meant to be spared.

Chimney Flashing in Waterloo, IA

Chimney Flashing

Chimneys leak more often than any other roof penetration in this city, and a good share of the ones we are called out to should simply come down. The postwar stock is full of masonry flues that stopped carrying anything the year the furnace was replaced with a sidewall-vented unit.

Emergency Tarping in Waterloo, IA

Emergency Tarping

Tarping a shallow roof is a different problem from tarping a steep one, and a tarp fitted the usual way will do more damage here than the storm did. Water on a low plane moves slowly and finds any lap that runs the wrong direction.

Commercial Roofing in Waterloo, IA

Commercial Roofing

Waterloo's commercial roof stock reflects exactly what the city was built to do: manufacturing bays, freight and warehouse buildings strung along the rail, and the low masonry storefronts of the neighborhood business districts. Almost all of it is low-slope membrane or metal deck.

We are roofers, not public adjusters. Iowa licenses public adjusters separately and we do not hold that license or pretend to.

Why Waterloo Chooses Waterloo Roof Pros

  • We measure and record the pitch of every plane before quoting, because under 4:12 the code changes the assembly and therefore changes the honest price.
  • We turn down work we cannot stand behind: shingle rejuvenators, tile on postwar rafters, and exposed-fastener panel below its rated slope.
  • We walk roofs rather than dronewalking them. Shallow planes here are safe on foot, and mat flexibility and deck movement are findings you can only get by hand.
  • We hold the City of Waterloo Residential Roofer License, which the state does not require and most storm crews arriving from out of town do not have.
  • We will not touch your deductible. Iowa treats absorbing or advertising it away as a practice that puts your own claim at risk.
  • We quote repairs when repairs are right. On a shallow roof the failure is usually one detail, and replacing the field does not fix a kickout.

About Waterloo Roof Pros in Waterloo, IA

Waterloo Roof Pros works the Cedar Valley from a simple starting position: the roof tells you what it needs, and the first thing it tells you is its slope. We measure before we price, we write the reading on the estimate, and we specify the assembly the code and the manufacturer actually require for that number rather than the one that is easiest to sell.

That approach came out of the housing here. This is a city that built fast and low for John Deere and Rath, and roughly three-quarters of its housing units predate 1980. Shallow planes, boxed eaves twelve inches deep, gapped board decks and flat carport roofs are our ordinary working conditions rather than the exception.

There are jobs we turn down. If you want tile on a postwar ranch, exposed-fastener panel on a plane that measures under 3:12, or a rejuvenator sprayed over shingles so the roof can be sold next spring, we are the wrong firm and we will say so on the first visit. We would rather lose the job than warranty something the specification does not support.

How It Works

01

We measure the slope first

A pitch gauge goes on every plane before anything is priced, and the reading is written on your estimate. We lift a corner course at the same time to count layers and see whether you have sheeting or gapped board decking underneath, because both change the fastening plan and the cost.

02

You get the findings in writing

Photographs by elevation, the slope of each plane, layer count, underlayment type, the condition of every flashing detail, and a remaining-life range instead of a single invented number. Where a roof still has life left in it, the range says so and nobody rings you afterward about it.

03

We scope the assembly, not the storm

The specification is built from what the roof actually is: two plies of underlayment where the pitch requires it, ice barrier past the wall line, a cricket behind any chimney wider than thirty inches, six nails per shingle on exposed planes. Everything on the quote is a line you can look up.

04

Permit, install, inspection, warranty

We pull the City of Waterloo permit under our own roofer license and leave the card posted until final inspection. Tear-off, deck repair, dry-in, flashing, field, ridge, cleanup with a rolling magnet, then the written workmanship warranty that names the flashing details individually.

What Waterloo Customers Say

★★★★★
They put a level on the carport roof, told me it read under two in twelve and that shingles were not legal on it, then quoted rubber. Nobody else even looked at the carport.
Dale Vogt · Evansdale
★★★★★
Two other bids said full replacement. This crew found a split boot and a caulked wall flashing, rebuilt the kickout properly and charged me under four hundred. Still dry a year on.
Marcia Boelts · Cedar Falls
★★★★★
Talked me out of the rejuvenator a door-knocker sold my neighbor, explained exactly what it does to a hail claim, and then scoped my roof one slope at a time so I could pay across two seasons.
Terrance Whitfield · Waverly
★★★★★
The report listed the pitch of every plane, the layer count and where the old felt had gone. First roofer who handed me something I could actually read and check.

Commercial roofing services in Waterloo, IA

Commercial and industrial low-slope roofing across the Cedar Valley

Waterloo's commercial stock is manufacturing bays, freight buildings along the rail and low masonry storefronts, which means membrane and metal deck rather than steep slope. We survey and map every penetration before quoting, because the abandoned equipment curb capped in mastic eleven years ago is usually the leak nobody can locate. Replacement gets specified by uplift exposure and by use, and maintenance contracts save more than any product choice.

  • Penetration surveys that map every curb, pitch pan and abandoned opening before a scope is written
  • TPO specified attached or adhered according to calculated corner uplift
  • Fully adhered EPDM and torch-applied modified bitumen where foot traffic governs
  • Tapered polyisocyanurate laid to a quarter inch per foot toward a real outlet
  • Drain sizing checked against current roof area, not the area it was built for
  • Twice-yearly maintenance visits clearing drains and re-terminating loose edge metal
  • Scheduling written around food processing, warehouse and light manufacturing hours
  • Infrared and core-cut moisture surveys before any recover is priced

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Iowa license roofing contractors, and does Waterloo?

Iowa issues no statewide roofing trade license. What Iowa requires is contractor registration under Iowa Code chapter 91C for anyone earning at least two thousand dollars a year from construction. Waterloo goes further than the state does: the city runs its own residential contractor exam and issues a separate Residential Roofer License, filed through INRCOG. Ask any bidder for both numbers.

Why does my estimate list the roof pitch?

Because it changes what the code allows. Below 2:12 asphalt shingles are not permitted at all. From 2:12 to 4:12 the assembly needs two plies of underlayment cemented together instead of one lapped ply. Above 4:12 one ply is enough. Publishing the measurement lets you check that the specification you are being sold matches the roof you actually own.

Was my roof damaged by the 2020 derecho?

It may have been, and Black Hawk County was in the path. It is still the wrong question to start from. What decides your roof today is the assembly: its slope, its layer count, whether the seal strips ever bonded and whether the flashing was ever right. A storm finds roofs that were already marginal. We scope from the roof, then look at the storm.

Can I put a metal roof on my ranch house?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the reading. Through-fastened agricultural panel is rated to 3:12 and a great many Waterloo ranch planes sit at or under that. Mechanically seamed standing seam is rated down to a quarter inch in twelve and will work almost anywhere, but it costs considerably more. We give you the number and both prices rather than one.

Should I coat my shingles instead of replacing them?

No. Shingle rejuvenators soften the asphalt binder and do nothing for a fractured mat, a failed seal strip or corroded valley metal. Worse, once a shingle roof has been sprayed, most manufacturers treat the warranty as void and adjusters treat the surface as unreadable, which can cost you a future hail claim. We do coat sound low-slope membrane, which is a different product entirely.

Why do my gutters overflow when my neighbor's do not?

Usually it is the discharge end rather than the gutter. Waterloo sits on flat glaciated ground where a great many lots have no fall at all, so a short extension puts water straight back against the foundation. Ten feet of extension, or a buried run to daylight, moves the volume. On a long shallow plane draining to one corner we also size up to six-inch gutter.
